Travel Guide

Where Mediterranean soul meets Pyrenean wild

Catalonia is built for explorers. Climb into the high silence of the Pyrenees, where bears still roam and rivers carve wild corridors through the mountains. Drop down to the Mediterranean coast for a salt-sprayed adventure. Traverse volcanic badlands, follow shepherd trails, chase starlight across remote ridges. This is Catalonia untamed – a region that dares you to go further, look closer and feel the land beneath your feet.

Good to know
  • Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) bring mild weather, blooming valleys, and quieter cities. Winter is perfect for Pyrenees skiing; summer means festivals, coastlines and warm days.
  • Language Warm-Up
A simple ‘Bon dia’ (Catalan) or ‘Buenos días’ (Spanish) goes a long way. In the Pyrenees’ Val d’Aran, locals speak Aranese – a unique Occitan language still proudly preserved.
  • Public Transport
Barcelona, Lleida, and Girona are extremely well-connected by train. To reach the Catalan Pyrenees, hop on the historic Tren dels Llacs from Lleida or take regional buses that thread deep into the mountains.
  • Etiquette 101
Catalans value politeness, eye contact and not raising your voice. When eating with locals, don’t pour wine before offering it to others – especially in the mountains, where traditions matter.
  • Altitude Awareness
Many villages in the Pyrenees sit above 1,000 metres; hiking routes climb far higher. Drink water, pace yourself, and expect quick weather changes – storms roll in fast.
  • Driving the Mountains
Mountain roads can be narrow and winding. Start early, refill your tank often, and don’t be surprised to share the road with sheep, cows or horses on transhumance routes.
  • Siesta Is Real – But Flexible
Shops in smaller towns (especially in the Pyrenees and rural Catalonia) may close between 14:00–17:00. Plan lunches late and enjoy the slower rhythm.
  • The Pyrenees Have Europe’s Darkest Skies
Catalonia has some of the best stargazing areas in Europe. UNESCO declared Vall de Boi a Starlight Destination and Montsec a Starlight Reserve.
  • Catalonia Has Its Own Bear Population
Brown bears were reintroduced in the late 1990s. Today, the Pyrenean forests are home to around 70 bears – though spotting one is rare and thrilling.
  • Where Two Cultures Meet: The Val d’Aran
This Pyrenean valley faces the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean –which is why its language (Aranese) belongs to the Occitan family. It’s Catalonia, but with a twist.
  • Castells: Human Towers That Touch the Sky
Catalonia’s castellers build towers up to ten levels high – and the tradition is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • The Original Paella? Not Here.
Paella is from Valencia, but Catalonia has its own rice classic: arroz de montaña, a traditional rice dish usually made with a combination of chicken thighs, bomba rice, onions, tomatoes, pork sausage, garlic, paprika or pimentón, saffron, chicken stock, toasted hazelnuts or almonds, parsley, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  • A Land of Volcanoes
La Garrotxa Natural Park is the most perfectly preserved volcanic region on the Iberian Peninsula – complete with lava flows and crater forests.
  • The Catalan Pyrenees Have a Species Found Nowhere Else
The Pyrenean desman – a tiny, long-snouted aquatic mammal – lives only in these mountains’ pristine rivers.
