Travel Guide

Where Arctic dreams meet untamed beauty

In Finnish Lapland, nature reigns supreme. Winter casts a spell with snow-draped forests, Northern Lights, and world-class skiing. Come summer, the sun never sets, lighting up fells, lakes, and endless trails. Autumn paints the wilderness gold, while spring brings crisp air and reindeer on the move. From husky sledding and ice hotels to midnight hikes and Sámi culture—Lapland is pure magic, all year round.

Midsummer Night in Levi, Finland

When the day dances on forever

‘In Levi, Finnish Lapland, midsummer defies darkness for 46 days, bathing the land in endless light. Time dissolves into golden nights of canoeing, joik singing, and plunges from the sauna into glassy lakes. Here, midsummer is luminous madness, where shadows vanish and nature sings. I love, love, love it.’

Finnish Lapland Info

Good to know
  • Public transport is limited—renting a car is your best bet. Especially in rural areas, buses may be infrequent or non-existent. If you’re exploring beyond Rovaniemi or Levi, having your own wheels offers freedom and flexibility.
  • It’s never truly dark in summer. From late May to mid-July, the Midnight Sun bathes Lapland in 24-hour daylight. Bring an eye mask if you’re sensitive to light while sleeping!
  • Winter temperatures can drop below -30°C, but locals rarely complain. With the right layers—thermal base, wool mid-layers, and a down outer—you’ll stay warm and dry. Most accommodations and activities offer appropriate winter gear for rent or loan.
  • Distances can be deceptive. Lapland looks compact on a map, but it’s vast and sparsely populated. Plan your itinerary with generous time buffers for travel and weather-related delays.
  • Mobile coverage is surprisingly strong—even in remote areas. Finland has excellent 4G coverage, and many outdoor cabins and wilderness lodges still offer Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity.
  • Be aware of reindeer on the road. Especially in summer and autumn, herds roam freely and often block traffic. Always drive cautiously, especially at dusk.
  • Supermarkets may close early, especially on Sundays. Stock up on essentials if you’re heading into rural areas. Alcohol stronger than 5.5% is sold only in state-run Alko stores, with limited hours.
  • Finns are very respectful of nature. The concept of Everyman’s Right (jokamiehenoikeus) allows you to roam freely in the wild, as long as you don’t disturb people, animals, or the environment. Pack out your waste and respect marked trails.
  • Mosquitoes are fierce in summer—but manageable. July and August bring biting bugs, especially near water and forest. Bring repellent, wear light long sleeves, and ask locals for tricks (like sauna smoke!).
  • You can drink tap water anywhere. Finland has some of the purest water in the world. In Lapland, it often comes straight from natural springs—cold, crisp, and completely safe.
  • Lapland is home to Europe’s only Indigenous people—the Sámi. Their ancestral homeland, called Sápmi, stretches across northern Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. The Sámi have their own languages, customs, and traditional livelihoods, including reindeer herding and handicrafts known as duodji.
  • The word ‘Lapland’ comes from ‘Lapp’, an old term used by outsiders to describe the Sámi. However, it’s considered outdated and even offensive by many Sámi people today. They prefer ‘Sámi’ and ‘Sápmi’ when referring to their culture and lands.
  • Finnish Lapland is the official home of Santa Claus. In Rovaniemi, just below the Arctic Circle, Santa has a post office that receives over half a million letters each year—mostly from children in China, Italy, and the UK.
  • The Northern Lights appear in Lapland up to 200 nights a year. Scientifically known as aurora borealis, they are caused by solar particles colliding with Earth’s magnetic field. The best months for spotting them are September to April, far from city lights
  • Lapland has more reindeer than people. With around 200,000 semi-domesticated reindeer and just 180,000 residents, the animals are vital to local culture, especially for Sámi herders who rely on them for food, clothing, and income.
  • The Sámi traditionally follow eight seasons instead of four. These nuanced divisions of the year reflect subtle changes in light, temperature, and animal behaviour—critical for timing reindeer migrations and other seasonal tasks.
  • The ‘kaamos’ or polar night doesn’t mean total darkness. Between December and January, the sun stays below the horizon, but the snow-covered landscapes glow with pastel light, creating surreal “blue hour” days.
  • Happy-hormone surge – Extra daylight boosts serotonin, fuelling energy and easy conversation.
  • Sleep gets weird – Slumber is shorter and lighter, shot through with Technicolor dreams that many visitors learn to cherish.
  • Time collapses – With no dusk cue, schedules dissolve; spontaneity flourishes and events blur out of sequence.
  • Sensory fatigue – The endless stimulation can overwhelm; the cure is to grant yourself daylight rest without guilt.
  • A sense of timelessness (and sometimes freedom).
  • More spontaneous behavior.
  • Altered memory encoding (you may remember moments vividly, but not in order)
  • A feeling of being in a dream or out of sync with the ‘real’ world

Forget spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The Sámi people — the Indigenous population of Lapland — divide the year into eight seasons. In Levi, that ancient way of seeing time makes perfect sense.

  1. Winter (Talvi): Deep snow, polar night, and Northern Lights.
  2. Spring-winter (Kevättalvi): Long sunny days on frozen lakes.
  3. Spring (Kevät): Melting snow, rushing rivers, migrating birds.
  4. Early summer (Kesänalku): First blossoms and fast-growing green.
  5. Summer (Kesä): The time of light, life, and midnight sun.
  6. Harvest season (Syyssato): Berries and mushrooms by the bucket.
  7. Autumn (Syksy): Flaming orange tundras, moody skies.
  8. First snow (Ensilumi): A light dusting that signals the start of winter’s return.
