City Trip Liège

Raw edges, soft heart

‘Running along the River Meuse as it cuts through Liège. Over quays and bridges, past tower blocks and grand old houses, through the working-class district of Outremeuse to the green calm of La Boverie park. Shoulder to shoulder with locals. And then, that same afternoon, stepping inside the museum in La Boverie, surrounded by works from masters like Picasso, Chagall, Van Dongen, Ensor, Monet, and Delvaux. A city trip done exactly right.’

Wallonia Info

Good to know
  • Best time to go: May to September brings long days, warm weather, and open-air festivals – from jazz in the streets to medieval jousts.

  • Tipping etiquette: Service is included, so no pressure, but rounding up a euro or two is a small gesture that wins big smiles.

  • First impressions: Always greet with ‘Bonjour’ when entering shops, cafés, or markets – skipping it is like walking in with muddy boots.

  • Language tip: French is the everyday tongue, but in tourist areas you’ll often find English, Dutch, or even German speakers.

  • Mealtime rhythm: Lunch is 12:00–14:00, dinner 19:00–21:00 – arrive outside those hours and you might be left with only frites.

  • Getting around: Trains and buses will get you between major towns, but to truly savour Wallonia’s winding rivers, rolling hills, and sleepy villages, hop on two wheels. Bicycle rentals are easy to find in bigger towns, and the region’s RAVeL network of old railway lines turned bike paths makes cycling both scenic and blissfully car-free. A car is still handy for reaching the most remote corners.

  • Market magic: Weekly markets are a sensory feast – think ripe cheese, glossy fruit tarts, and sausages spiced like local gossip.

  • Lazy Sundays: Many shops take the day off, so plan ahead – or embrace the slower pace with a riverside stroll.

  • Aquarium surprise: Liège hides Europe’s biggest freshwater aquarium, where 2,500 creatures swim through 250 species – a perfect rainy-day wander.

  • Forest with a past: The peaceful Ardennes once echoed with tanks and gunfire during the WWII Battle of the Bulge – today it’s all birdsong and bike trails.

  • Saxophone city: Musical history was made in Dinant, where Adolphe Sax invented the saxophone – you’ll spot colourful sax statues lining the streets.

  • Castle overload: With more castles per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world, Wallonia could give Game of Thrones a run for its money.

  • Party with a past: Binche’s carnival, complete with Gilles in feathered hats, has been shaking its UNESCO-listed hips since the 14th century.

  • Monk’s brew: Chimay beer is made by Trappist monks who speak little but brew a lot – every bottle supports the abbey and good causes.

  • Meatballs, Walloon style: Boulets à la Liégeoise are giant meatballs in a sweet-and-sour sauce of beer, onions, and sirop de Liège – dangerously addictive.

  • Above the Meuse: A hot-air balloon over the Meuse Valley offers the kind of sunrise you’ll tell your grandchildren about one day.

  • Boulets à la Liégeoise – Big, juicy meatballs bathing in a rich, sweet-and-sour sauce made with beer, onions, and sirop de Liège. Served with frites so crisp they practically sing.

  • Tarte al Djote – From Nivelles with love: chard, fresh herbs, and tangy boulette de Nivelles cheese wrapped in buttery pastry. Rustic, filling, and perfect with a glass of local beer.

  • Chimay Trappist Beer & Cheese – Brewed and aged by monks in peaceful abbey walls, this heavenly pairing proves silence really can be golden.

  • Sirop de Liège – Dark, sticky, and naturally sweet, this apple-pear reduction transforms bread, cheese, or roast meats into pure comfort food.

  • Couque de Dinant – Rock-hard honey biscuits carved like little works of art. Too pretty to eat… until you dunk them in your coffee.

  1. Grand-Hornu (Boussu, Hainaut Province) – A 19th-century coal mining powerhouse turned UNESCO-listed playground for art and design lovers. Industrial chic at its finest.
  2. Bois du Cazier (Marcinelle, near Charleroi, Hainaut Province) – A moving tribute to mining history, where galleries, slag heaps, and memorials tell the story of the 1956 disaster and the people who lived it.
  3. Le Pass (Frameries, Hainaut Province) – Science meets history in this old coal mine turned interactive park, complete with a glass-roofed viewing tower over the Borinage.
  4. Blegny-Mine (Blegny, Liège Province) – Strap on a helmet and descend 30 metres underground to walk in the boots of miners. Grit, echoing tunnels, and the smell of history included.
  5. Blaton–Pommeroeul Canal (Hainaut Province) – A hauntingly beautiful stretch of abandoned waterway, with crumbling locks and moss-covered bridges that feel straight out of a film set.
  6. Street Art in Charleroi (Charleroi, Hainaut Province) – Industrial walls and abandoned factories reborn as massive canvases for vibrant murals. Best explored on foot through the city’s gritty, photogenic quarters.
  7. Cité Miroir (Liège, Liège Province) – Once an elegant art deco swimming pool, now a cultural centre and exhibition space where the tiled walls still whisper of its glamorous past.
