This Catalonia Pyrenees Special did not begin at a café terrace, nor with a gentle stroll through sunlit villages. It began with a wonderfully terrible idea. Javi, our Spanish Editor, clearly inspired by either genius or mild madness, suggested that to truly understand Catalonia’s wild heart, we should walk the Porta del Cel. Not just walk it, but climb roughly 1,500 meters of elevation every day, straight through the rugged spine of the Pyrenees.

On paper, Porta del Cel is poetry. High passes opening to endless horizons, glacial lakes reflecting silence, stone villages clinging to time. In reality, it is also calves on fire, lungs negotiating new terms, and minds wondering why elevators were never invented for mountains. The trail is relentless and so is its beauty. For every moment of doubt, there is a view that resets the soul. For every aching step, a reminder that landscapes like this are earned, not consumed.

After the heights of Porta del Cel, we take to the road. Two travellers, one map, and a Tesla tracing part of the Catalonia Grand Tour, past backroads, villages, rivers, and small hotels that turn driving into discovery.

We travel south into the gentler rhythms of Pallars Jussà, toward the village of Senterada and Casa Leonardo. A benchmark of ecotourism in Catalonia, it is a place where travel slows down, food comes from the land, and tradition is lived rather than displayed. Here, authenticity is not curated; it simply exists.

We continue by exploring the Pyrenees through the senses. These mountains are meant to be tasted and listened to as much as admired. Along the way, the journey takes unexpected turns: guitar music drifting through high valleys, the presence of the elusive Pyrenean brown bear, and night skies that remind you how rare true darkness has become.
