Adventures around the Explora Lodge in the Atacama Desert of Chile

The natural and human beauty that northern Chile has to offer

'Did you know that if you were to place Chile on a map of Europe, it would stretch from the North Cape in Norway all the way to the northern border of Morocco?'

Chile is a country of contrasts. It is approximately 4,300 kilometres long from north to south but averages only 177 kilometres in width. It extends along the west coast of South America, from the border with Peru down to Cape Horn. Chile boasts a unique diversity of climates, ranging from the cool fjords in the south to the arid desert in the north. In our previous Route of Parks Special, we explored southern Chile. This time, our journey took us to the north.

We started along the Pacific coast, travelling through the Coquimbo region, where we ventured out with the trashumantes – shepherds who migrate through the high Andes with their flocks in search of fertile pastures. Not far from there, in the village of Chungungo, we joined local fishermen and mollusc divers.

We had the chance to tame a horse with the help of harp music (really!), drank the national spirit pisco until we, well, got drunk, learned how houses were built in the past, explored the Atacama Desert – the driest desert in the world – where we still found water in the form of geysers and hot rivers, gazed at flamingos on the vast salt flats, and surfed down sand dunes…

And, and, and…

In short, read and enjoy all the natural and human beauty of northern Chile.
