Sustainable luxury in Peru
Titilaka at Lake Titicaca

by Marco BarneveldPearls of Paradise

When the sun sets on Lake Titicaca and the waves crash gently against the sacred shore, there is no better spot to enjoy this gift of Mother Nature than the hot tub on the terrace of Titilaka. The lodge is arguably one of the most sustainable, amazing high-end luxury hotels in Peru.

Split between Peru and Bolivia, the magnificent Lake Titicaca, considered by Incas to be the sacred birthplace of human civilization is one of the most massive, deepest, and highest bodies of water on the globe. Backpackers have long made the pilgrimage to these shores; Titilaka, by contrast, is a high-end luxury boutique hotel set to bring a whole new audience to this sacred water.

Visitors often compare the setting with the Scottish Highlands or Patagonia. Rugged yet gently sloped mountains against sparkly water. Titilaka is strategically located in a rural community south of Puno, the main city in the Peruvian shore of the lake, surrounded by small hamlets of indigenous Quechua and Aymara cultures. Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake at 3,810 meters above sea level, it covers some 8,300 square km (about a quarter of The Netherlands in comparison), has a depth of 107 meters and is 80 km wide.

Jaw-dropping view

Surrounded by stunning scenery and natural geography, Titilaka’s contemporary design and comfort integrate with the natural environment. It stands solitary and majestically on the grassy edge of the lake. The high-end linens, handcrafted bath products, and oversized tubs are pleasant, to be sure, but the real attraction is the jaw-dropping view of the deep blue water through the vast picture windows.

The three-story lodge offers 18 lake-view rooms facing Taquile and Amantani islands to the north; the Bolivian Cordillera Real to the East, along with Lake Titicaca which stretches to the East and West. As of this year, it also offers four state-of-the-art domes directly facing the lake. At the northern tip of the peninsula is the dock, departure point for local and excursion boats. It’s fitting, as nearly every activity at Titilaka centres around the lake; cocktail hour on the waterfront terrace, kayak excursions, gourmet dinners of freshly caught trout.

Promoting conservation practices

The good people of Titilaka honour the beauty of Mother Nature, which has given them these immaculate views and location, by keeping a low carbon footprint. The hotel uses hydroelectric power, natural gas, sources local produce and employs mostly local workers. Interpreters are focused on promoting conservation practices, accentuating local traditions, customs and culture. The hotel actively participates with the local community in various developmental, educational, conservation and social projects. These opportunities are available for guests.

It’s lavishly equipped, it’s contemporary, it’s sustainable and helps the local community, it has a fantastic location in a culturally tremendous exciting spot. That’s all true. But at its heart, Titilaka is appealing in a down-to-earth way that’s faithful to its natural environment. And that is the real accomplishment of this amazing Peruvian Pearl of Paradise.
