Other times, I paddled out in a kayak or explored the island by bicycle. One afternoon, I treated myself to an in-room massage—a blissful indulgence that felt like the final word in relaxation.
The food alone deserves its own chapter. The Portofino Restaurant impressed me with fresh, elegant flavours—lobster tail dripping with garlic butter, homemade breads, and local vegetables prepared with a European touch. More than once, I dined by candlelight beneath the stars, the Caribbean sky glowing gold and violet as the sun slipped away. Breakfasts were just as memorable: tropical fruit, warm pastries, fresh juice, and that endless view of the sea.
What truly sets Portofino apart, though, is the people. The staff weren’t just friendly, they were sincerely kind and attentive. They remembered how I took my coffee, shared insider tips on San Pedro, and anticipated what I needed before I even asked. It’s a family-run resort, and you feel that care in every detail, every smile, every thoughtful gesture.
One afternoon, I took a boat ride into San Pedro. It’s just 30 minutes away by golf cart if you want shops, beach bars, or a bit of lively culture. I enjoyed the visit, but I was more than ready to return to the quiet haven I’d found back at Portofino.
I also appreciated the resort’s commitment to sustainability. They’ve made real efforts to reduce single-use plastics, conserve energy, and support the local community. The buildings are thoughtfully designed to let the breeze do most of the cooling, and native plants flourish without chemical fuss.
It’s clear that Portofino doesn’t just exist on the island—it belongs here. In a region packed with luxury resorts, Portofino manages to stand out not by being the loudest or the most extravagant, but by being the most genuine. It reminded me what travel is really about: connection, simplicity, beauty—and sometimes, doing absolutely nothing.
